Rarely—but we’re so grateful you asked! With full-time jobs, a kiddo, and a packed filming schedule, most of our tying and production happens in the evenings and on weekends. This is a passion project, and keeping it fresh and inspiring means focusing on new creations rather than tying the same patterns in bulk.

But seriously, they’re both. I like the term ‘functional art’. Each fly is absolutely fishable, but would feel right at home mounted and framed on the wall. Rarely, I’ll experiment and end up with a fly that looks cool, but that I don’t think would fish effectively. In these instances, I make sure to note that the fly design is a work in progress and not likely to catch fish.

I started tying flies in January of 2024. I’m largely self-taught through books and online tutorials, though I’ve worked with a couple of great tyers to hone my skills. I’m only at the beginning of this journey and always welcome feedback – there’s always more to learn!

Here’s where I started and I highly recommend this setup to any beginner:

• The Orvis Fly Tying Guide by Tom Rosenbauer – Great beginner book with pictures for visual learners and chapters on tools and materials.
• Peak Rotary Vise – Holds the hook securely while you tie your flies – a rotary vise is helpful but not required for beginners. The Peak boasts great value and durability.
• Rite Bobbin (Standard or Ceramic) – Holds and controls your thread for precise wrapping. The Rite Bobbin has adjustable tension and is great quality.
• Renomed Fly Tying Scissors – Fine-point scissors for cutting thread and materials cleanly. The Renomed scissors are as beautiful as they are useful.
• Standard Whip Finisher – Helps secure the thread with a clean finishing knot.

When it comes to materials, your needs will vary greatly depending on what types of flies you tie. FlyFishFood.com is a great place to start with a wide variety of tools and materials, and excellent customer service!

Absolutely! I’ve been fishing spinner setups for most of my life with varying degrees of success. I started tying flies before I started fly fishing, but I’ve got a fly rod and reel and I’m working on my cast!
